Godefroid, F. – La Berceuse, Morceau de Concert

Genre: Romantic
Difficulty: 7
Pages: 5

La Berceuse is an ideal piece to introduce moderately advanced players to Godefroid’s musical language. It starts with a caressing and playful tune whose repetitious accompaniment effectively lulls the ear, then goes into a middle section of effusive character, as if sleep comes from within to overcome us with a powerful rush. The melody is fleshed out by a cross-fingered pattern, a device used by Godefroid in many pieces to help build the emotional climax. A small cadenza serves as a transition to bring back the first theme, which soon repeats itself into oblivion. A facsimile edition.

Godefroid La Berceuse, Morceau de ConcertGodefroid- La Berceuse -sample

Félix Godefroid (1818-1897) was the best-known concert harpist in France during the romantic era, in the wake of virtuosos like cellist Servais and violinist Bériot. While most of his works were formidable pieces for his own recitals, in his old age he also composed some delightful, easier gems for his students. Several of those are gathered in the two books of Pensées musicales. Heart-felt and uplifting, Godefroid’s musical writing reveals his propensity for melody (also in a strong left hand) and capacity for creating enchantment with the simplest devices. Celia Chan Valerio’s brand new CD, released in honor of the bicentenary of his birth, provides a great introduction to this lost fairy-tale world.
