A Favorite Air from the opera Anna Bolena by Donizetti, “Come innocente giovane”, may become fashionable again, as bel canto opera continues to make inroads into the mainstream repertoire.
This facsimile presents the music the way it looked in a mid-19th century edition, possibly published in America (Philadelphia). The musical writing is definitely modeled after Naderman, in terms of techniques used. But Labarre did see further ahead, embracing the double-action pedal-harp and its potential, and following closely Parish Alvars’s innovations. Thus, the writing is also animated, leaving us on our toes with its surprising turns, and with a whiff of brilliance.
